Hi,

One of the biggest fascinations and innovations of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, compared to all other currently released GTA titles (yes, including even GTA V), is the presence of multiple paved airports and multiple large cities on a big map, with planes available to fly.

To obtain a plane, it's highly recommended that you seek one second-hand from another player, as they can be very expensive. Not only to purchase, but also to maintain should anything go wrong.

To fly a plane legally, one must obtain a pilot's license from the airport. It cost $375,000 last I checked, and the test is absurdly challenging and not very realistic to what you're going to be actually doing, assuming you're going the legal route. Nevertheless, it exists to test your skill with the aircraft, or more likely, to hone it until you can get it right. Don't worry, you only pay if you succeed.

At the time of writing this unofficial guide, the plane registration has not been fully reinstated on forum. Therefore, at this time, it's your responsibility to pick a realistic call-sign for your plane. (ex.N978PP)

As far as plane registration goes, here's a quote from an admin:

Essentially, the government doesn't have an active aircraft ledger set up as of 21st of June, 2024. Currently it's not illegal to fly planes with registered bill of sale, a realistic callsign and a pilots license.

All planes are fitted with radios (but not script-wise, so go to a 24/7 and buy a radio) and must be tuned to the ATC frequency (which is 20). Your plane stays parked in an airport hangar, and you must communicate with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) of the Los Santos Airport, codenamed LSX, via the proper template:

/r LSX, [CALLSIGN], [REQUEST]
(wait 10 seconds)
/r LSX, [CALLSIGN], proceeding with [REQUESTED ACTION]

Now, of course, in real-life one would need an actual ATC staff member to approve or deny any request at the airport. Seeing as there are no ATC staff, you are allowed to "NPC" it (pretend that there is one) with caution, as long as all members of your current roleplay party agree.

Legally, a pilot is expected to update the ATC of the following situations:

 • emergency (“Mayday!”x3, callsign, number of souls on board, altitude/location, issue)

 • taxi to/from a specific runway

 • take-off/landing at a specific runway

 • poor weather conditions/visibility

 • entering/leaving city airspace

Always ensure you have a stable internet connection, before you go flying an aircraft in any multiplayer game. Good luck, and safe flying!

✈️

This is actually a great reference especially as piloting is definitely something that could grow in the future with more interest. By no means is it cheap, but it’s an enjoyable experience once you get through all the hoops and opens up so many doors both on the legal and illegal side. Definitely gonna be using the map in the future.
