The paradise he seeks is fragile, dependent on sacrifices that leave permanent scars. Both stories wrestle with the tragedy that true freedom is unattainable in a world built on violence and manipulation. The world "perdition" refers to a state of eternal punishment and damnation into which a sinful and unpenitent person passes after death.
