Ulysses
In the gritty streets of Los Santos, Peter Daniels was once a young and idealistic police officer working for the Los Santos Police Department. But as his expectations about the job clashed with the reality of police work, Daniels grew embittered and disillusioned as he became a primary witness of the violence in the streets of his hometown. Despite that, he remained faithful to his role of peacemaker, and his commitment to the cause eventually led to him developing a cynical outlook on everything that surrounds him, never missing the chance to manifest his disappointment. Hot-headed and ruthless, Daniels became a seasoned and outspoken veteran street cop no stranger to underhanded tactics, overly attached to his set of personal values and willing to do what's needed to keep the streets safe. His relentless attitude rewards him with a Detective qualification, which he never uses in favor of remaining on the streets, and a promotion to a leadership position in the Gang Enforcement Detail of Parkside Station. But when two crooked police officers attempt to recruit him to work for a local street gang, Daniels refuses to play along as he believes that there's nothing more dishonorable than betraying his oath to "protect and serve". His failure to promptly inform his superiors as he tries to contain the situation himself, however, leads the Internal Affairs Group of the Los Santos Police Department to hold him accountable for the mistakes of his colleagues after they are killed for their role in the shenanigan, and Daniels finds himself terminated from the Department. After fighting his termination in court and being defeated by the powerful LSPD political machine, Daniels refuses to surrender and files for a lateral transfer with the San Andreas Department of Corrections, the only agency he feels will overlook the injustice he feels he was subjected to. Narrowly managing to get hired, he sets off to improve himself and depart his old ways of dealing with crime with the aim of proving to the world that he is more worthy than how he was depicted by the LSPD. His hiring creates friction between SADOC and the LSPD, however, and Daniels contributes to raise the stakes ever higher, always skirting the line between being fired for his inter-departmental antics and being promoted to positions of increasing responsibility. Faced with new challenges and a way more demanding job, forced to work with little resources in an heavily hostile environment where no one seems to care, Daniels keeps his skeptical and misanthropic views on the world, but at the same time finds himself particularly at ease with more and more complex investigations, different from the regular street crimes he used to deal with, and grows comfortable with his new job. As a result of his constant commitment and tireless investigations, he rises to become the chief investigator at the San Andreas Correctional Facility. His life gets furthermore twisted by his encounter with an LSPD Detective, and the relationship with her awakes in Daniels a caring side he had been forced to suppress, even putting him on a path to earn a promotion to a supervisory position, which he had always refused to do, to ensure some financial stability for the couple. But his maverick ways to pursue investigations eventually catch the attention of the Los Santos Police Department, whose higher ranks wholeheartedly disagree with Daniels' goals and eventually arrest him on questionable charges of vigilantism and false imprisonment after he detains a witness on flimsy grounds. Daniels' luck has yet to run out, however. The D.A. refuses to press charges against him, resulting in the entire case against him unraveling. His long-time adversaries in the city's police force are forced to retire soon after, in small part due to the suit Daniels files against the City of Los Santos for the violation of his rights. He is reinstated in the Department of Corrections and given back his old position, but his time in county jail has irrevocably changed him, perhaps for the better. He finally wins his historical reluctance to marry and proposes to his girlfriend. She says yes. Having coming to terms with his past, Daniels is promoted to Lieutenant and, in an ironic twist of fate, is appointed to be an internal Affairs investigator. The birth of his two kids helps him become even more responsible and level-headed, but his newfound serenity is seriously tested when he finds an unexpected powerful enemy in the State's very own government, which has plans to reform the correctional system. Daniels, along with Warden John Winnfield and Captain David Pittman, fights the revamp; though they are ultimately defeated, not everything is yet lost for him. His unrelenting efforts in working every assignment until the task at hand is completed lead Daniels back to the San Andreas Correctional Facility as a Captain. As proof of how far he's come from the wayward methods of his younger days, Daniels is even appointed Acting Warden for a brief period of time, before being placed in charge of coordinating investigations Department-wide. With a whole life of public service, Daniels is now 62, and retired from the Department after hitting the mandatory retirement age. Contrary to his expectations, though, with a younger wife who's still on the job and two adult children who have already left home, retirement for Daniels looks less like a paradise and more like a gilded cage. Convinced he still has a lot to offer to the world of law enforcement, he's very, very unwilling to let go... A sequel to / reboot of 2014's Get Busy Livin'. A sidequel to 2021's Fort Defiance.
