What’s the Best Way to Handle Cost Forecasting for New Builds?

Every time I start a new building project, the hardest part is getting a realistic forecast before construction begins. There are so many moving pieces materials, labor availability, design revisions—and it feels like the estimate can shift overnight. I’m wondering how others here deal with this uncertainty when planning out a new build.

Some people rely heavily on building estimating tools or services to break down costs more clearly and avoid missing critical items. From what I’ve seen, having a structured estimate early on can prevent a lot of budget issues once the project starts taking shape.

I’d love to hear what approaches or strategies other builders, contractors, or planners use to maintain accuracy. Whether you use software, outsourced help, or your own system, any insight would be helpful for improving the early planning process.
