When the IED blew Sam apart, it felt like time stopped. That night the squad was drowning in grief and rage. I drove us out to the valley of Qala Nur, where the Taliban had a foothold. Only a few miles east there was a small underground base, the same group that blew up Sam? Killed 5 of our man just two weeks later, then thier base was about to be raided, the only thing our guys found inside? Bombs that blew the base up and left 3 of our guys injured.
When command learned what happened, they didn’t punish us. They buried the truth, falsified the reports, and locked it away. The world would never know, but I can’t forget.
