Age 0-13

Kia Burks grew up in Crenshaw to a drunkard father Brandon Burks and her mother, Jayla Burks. Her father was a notorious drunkard whose addiction consumed all of the family's financial resources. Kia's mother, Jayla Burks, worked tirelessly at low-paying jobs, but her efforts were often undermined by Brandon's relentless demand for money to feed his addictions. The household was frequently filled with the echoes of arguments and the oppressive silence that followed physical altercations.

 

Amidst the chaos, Kia found an unexpected escape from her daily troubles at home: Basketball, at the age of 8, she stumbled upon a basketball game at Crenshaw High School. The energy, teamwork, the sheer joy of the game captivated her. She began spending every spare moment at the school, dribbling, shooting, and practicing her moves. Basketball was a way for her to escape her life back at home.

 

However, the stress of her abusive household began to take its toll. By the time she was twelve, Kia had picked up smoking as a coping mechanism. The small moments of reprieve it provided were enough to keep her going, even as her father's temper flared and the bruises accumulated. This habit of hers would have an adverse effect on her health; despite her passion for basketball, Kia repeatedly failed to make it to the school team. Her coaches cited her poor stamina and bad conditioning as major reasons for her rejection.

 

Age 14

 

Kia's life would take a slight turn, as the financial burden on her family rose with debts being accumulated on her mom. She would take up a job at Ms. Wangs's store in Crenshaw Neighborhood to earn below the minimum wage to help her mom out anyway she can. During this time, Kia would get involved with the local community of Crenshaw and develop an interest in the art of Tattoos.
