"In Mexican Mafia vernacular, there is a distinction beetween a Sureño and a Camarada. EME members consider a Camarada or Soldado as the most loyal to the organization and is valued above all others.

Performing at the highest criminal level, any Sureño who puts in the necessary work can become a Camarada/Soldado. In fact, a Norteño can become a Camarada as well. There are a number of Mexican Mafia members that are Norteños. The EME does not discriminate based on geographic location, although a Norteño who has previously allied himself with the rival Nuestra Familia or Nuestra Raza would never be considered a Camarada or Soldado. Dual affiliation or membership in rival organizations is unheard of in this sub-culture. This type of Norteño would be an immediate target." — The Mexican Mafia Encyclopedia.
