  2. Preface: By no means do I consider myself an expert on the matter of Chinese roleplay, I've just spent some time doing it and want to share my knowledge. Originally I wrote out this stuff to post on our faction's discord for people to check out but I figured I might as well post it here too (certain texts have been altered for this version). This guide should give you the basics to roleplay a Chinese character, especially for those of you who are interested in joining our Chinese community based in Textile City. Chinese roleplay has some serious depth to it if you're willing to take the plunge. Characters can vary significantly due to their/their family's geographic origin, affecting the language/s they speak, the food they make, to generalize, their culture and lifestyle as a whole. I'll add that Shah of Persia has an extremely well written in-depth guide on the matter of Chinese roleplay and I highly recommend checking it out, that is once the old forums are visible again (as of writing this thread its still hidden). Geography, Language and Culture The People's Republic of China administers 34 provincial-level divisions or first-level divisions, including 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities, and 2 special administrative regions and 1 claimed province. China is big, so big it's divided up into pieces, and those pieces are divided into smaller pieces which are divided into smaller pieces and so on. Different regions in China have different cultures, and more importantly, languages. When speaking about the language, the term "Chinese" is an extreme generalization since it's actually divided to various languages that for the most part are not mutually intelligible, though they do share the same writing system/s (traditional or simplified Chinese characters, aka Hanzi). Among these languages are Standard Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka, Wu, Gan and some others. The geographical origin of your character's family is important here because it will affect the first thing you decide when creating a character, said character's name. Because of there being different languages between regions, pronunciation may vary greatly and while the writing system for all the languages is the same, the sounds the characters make are completely different, and by extension how they are written in English. An example of this is the Mandarin name Wang, an extremely popular name among Chinese people. In Cantonese the name is written and pronounced Wong and in Wu Chinese it can be Waon or Whang. Wherever you choose your character's family to have originated from should impact the way their last name is spelled and the Chinese dialect they speak. Have fun with it, research regional culture and customs to represent in your character and achieve it's full potential. You can find a Wikipedia article containing a chart with Chinese surnames and their romanizations according to language here. Mandarin as a bridge language Due to the various languages spoken throughout the Chinatown environment a bridge language is required (a language or dialect systematically used to make communication possible between groups of people who do not share a native language or dialect), usually in addition to their original regional language, unless the bridge language is their regional language. In our community we will be using Standard Mandarin as a bridge language, meaning that if you roleplay a character originating from our community it is optional for him to speak Standard Mandarin in addition to whatever dialect native to his geographic origin. If your character originated from elsewhere in the city, country or otherwise, and only recently moved into or around the Chinatown it is entirely possible they will not speak Standard Mandarin unless as previously mentioned, their geographical origin would make it logically so. This does not mean other languages will not be spoken throughout the community, rather we highly encourage people to create varied characters, not necessarily even Chinese. Roleplaying a non-Chinese Asian character in the Chinatown community is totally fine. The use of this bridge language is simply to permit the majority of characters in our community to communicate on a comprehensive level. In fact, no one said your character has to be good at the bridge language, neither do they have to speak it at all for that matter if you choose to do so. The choice is yours. Face Interesting as the Chinese physiological face is, the psychological face makes a still more fascinating study. It is not a face that can be washed or shaved, but a face that can be "granted" and "lost" and "fought for" and "presented as a gift". Here we arrive at the most curious point of Chinese social psychology. Abstract and intangible, it is yet the most delicate standard by which Chinese social intercourse is regulated. Simply put, face is a concept within Chinese society that can be translated as honor, respect or social standing. This is actually a widespread concept throughout Asia and other parts of the world and can even be seen in how most street gangs operate socially. This is especially relevant in a Chinatown setting where as much effort as possible is put in to ensure the continuation and preservation of Chinese culture against the surrounding Western culture/s that attempt to influence these communities. At it's core, face is how people perceive you. To lose face is to be seen as less, to gain face is to be seen as more, and to save face means you have managed to maintain your status despite some sort of incident that could have cost you face. Actions have consequences, and people will look at you with disdain if you are a stain on their society, however they may also think highly of you if you are an upstanding member of the community. On the subject of Snakeheads, Triads and Tongs (This is a very brief explanation of each term so you may be acquainted with it, recommended to research on your own if it interests you) Snakeheads are individuals involved in human trafficking and smuggling. If you need to get into America illegally from China, you get in contact with a Snakehead who will get you in, for a price. Triads are illegal organizations, usually secret societies originating in China. Triads do not exist within the United States of America. A Triad may however have operations that extend to America or groups operating under them within that territory. Tongs are benevolent organizations founded within Chinatowns that serve as community centers of sorts. Originally they were founded to support local migrants with work, housing and education, but also operated gambling dens and became tied to illegal operations operating out of those same Chinatowns. The word "Tong" is Cantonese for the word "hall", a gathering place. Afterword Hopefully this guide has given you the basic tools to create a Chinese character or taught you something new. Questions will be answered, criticism is welcome, pointed out mistakes will be fixed and if you've got another section you'd like to see added, pitch it, I'll see if I can write something.   6. Golconda Fort is located in the western part of Hyderabad city and is about 9 km from the Hussain Sagar Lake. The outer fort occupies an area of three square kilometers, which is 4.8 kilometers in length. It was originally known as click counter Mankal, and built on a hilltop in the year 1143. It was originally a mud fort under the reign of Rajah of Warangal. Later it was fortified between 14th and 17th centuries by the Bahmani Sultans and then the ruling Qutub She dynasty. Golconda was the principal capital of the Qutub Shahi kings. The inner fort contains ruins of palaces, mosques and a hill top pavilion, which rises about 130 meters high and gives a bird’s eye view of other buildings.

  8. Overrated? Anything that's been done a billion times over and provides nothing new. AND ROLEPLAYING A CHARACTER WITHOUT FLAWS! Law Enforcement your typical "gang" roleplayer "Mallrats" or people who drive around riced up cars and don't develop their characters, just wreck into people for 16 hours.   9. In my opinion, we need expenses. Most of these communities (that I'm aware of) don't put enough emphasis on money going out from your character's pocket/bank, aside from buying character customization, vehicles, buying properties, and drugs/weapons. There need to be more day-to-day expenses, like medical bills and ambulance fees, utility bills, insurance, mortgages, leases, loans, and rent, etc. I get that people don't want to get home from work and hop in-game just to start grinding so they don't lose their virtual house, which is why finding the right balance between expenses and income is essential. Personally, I want to see a realistic economy that mirrors real-life prices, but at the same time, I don't want to have to spend hours almost every day working in-game so that my character can afford necessities for my roleplay. The economy is a hard to get right. We need it to be fair and not punish those who can't spend dozens of hours a week in-game, but at the same time it's clear that inflation will start happening and ruin the economy a year or so down the line unless approrpiate measures are put in place.

  11. This topic has always been a heavily debated one. I'd personally like see a whole restructure and re-thinking of how the economy works in this game. Without going in to copious amounts of detail, I think the following are key in order to establish an economy that address both hyper inflation and realism; 1. Money needs to be a physical item in your inventory. It can be stored in cars, your properties etc. Anything that is on you, can be taken like any other item in game. 2. Illegal role-players need to be forced into cleaning "dirty" money via a businesses. This will prevent people from making 100k from a drug deal and then going to buy a house without any legal repercussions. You'd have a financial crimes unit in PD to deal with this, as well as a few basic scripts to allow the IC police to track this sort of thing. 3. The administration needs to take a really hard look at how money is brought into the server, in which avenues it travels from player to player and then how they plan for money to "exit" the server. Some examples of money being brought in; welfare, script jobs, etc. Some examples of money moving around; players paying employee's, illegal activities, legitimate business. Some examples of money leaving the server; taxes (sales tax, income tax, capital gains tax), police seizing assets / money because of illegal activity and destroying it. Anyone who knows anything about economics or studied this in school knows that creating a realistic economy in this type of environment will require a large amount of effort / scripting. As well as a very well thought-out plan that will require constant oversight and correction. Is it possible? For sure it is, it just depends how seriously the management team deems a realistic economy to be and how much effort they want to put in. I personally think if a realistic economy was created, this would be a huge win for role-play in general, and would draw a massive number of players to this server.

  12. So what I've learned from the my best experiences in roleplaying is that grinding is generally bad and fruitless. It's neither realistic nor fun to grind script jobs so you can buy the stuff you want. Personally for me, the best experience I had, was that acquiring businesses in the first place should be VERY easy. That said, you have to consider that I'm talking about rather normal and small businesses, an electronics shop, a flower shop, a cafe, a bar, etc. These businesses are the heart of roleplay and can be given out to people so that they can start roleplaying at once. Of course a management group of sort should be there to overlook the process, both ICly and OOCly and keep the business owners in check. As for bigger businesses like clubs, casinos, dealerships, and generally the ones that require a large investment, the same management group should give them out by applying more filters and more reasoning for the person who applies for such business. Also another script that I've seen that's worked very well, is that server pays the people who work at most of the businesses by their active playing time inside that business. You RP an hour in a 24/7 when you are hired there and you get X money from the server. This makes roleplaying the best way to acquire money and bypasses many of the grinding ways that have been seen in almost all GTA roleplay servers. Another thing to keep in mind is that money can be an OOC asset. My character could have 100,000$ in his bank account but I should be able to ignore that and roleplay a homeless person. So I myself am against any sort of limitation that prevents players from roleplaying what they want. I have a lot to say but I will pour it out gradually since I have no idea where the management here is headed with the script.
