DTOs have been revealed to have a huge involvement in the international arms market where they use their logistics connection to source and distribute various firearms. They range from basic hand guns to military issued guns most of which are procured through the international black market or through bribing officials. These arms are mostly deployed by DTOs to safeguard their consignments of drugs, to enforce subjugation over competitors as well as to ensure their continued dominance over geographical regions. This intimidation from the use of weapons is very crucial to them; it allows them to act with near-impunity, and oversee areas which have little or no government authority.

Consequently, the effects of this arms trafficking are not limited to the drug business only. The weapons that DTOs provide are also used in other crimes that include robberies, coercion and violent battles over territories. Local gangs who may be affiliated to or armed by DTOs also employ them in their own criminal activities hence increasing crime and violence in the society. This cycle of violence not only disrupts social order but also puts pressure on local law enforcing and judicial structures to try and maintain law and order in areas dominated by DTOs.

As well, DTOs retain much control over the drug and arms markets and are able to directly uphold high prices and stamp out competition in this market. This monopolistic control normally results in brutal skirmishes as DTOs try to extend their territories and clear off competition this has the effect of adding to insecurity in already delicate areas. The high accessibility of these trafficked weapons aggravates the social and economic conditions in these areas with usual implications like displacement, economic downfall and high levels of insecurity. Fighting the intertwined problems of drug and arms trafficking is a complicated task that cannot be solved without the help of long-term top-down approaches that explain how these organizations function and how they supply themselves and at the same time control social conditions that enable them to do so.
